Key Features
Sorry
Sorry
We’re having a little trouble.
When dogs have damage to kidney tissues, the kidneys cannot perform as well as before, like filtering and reabsorbing nutrients. The condition is not reversible, but progression may be slowed. Therapeutic foods for kidney conditions are designed to help reduce workload on the kidneys, enabling them to function more effectively. Dogs with decreased kidney function may experience loss of appetite and their food intake might decline.
Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians developed Hill's Prescription Diet k/d clinical nutrition with ActivBiome+ Kidney Defense, a proprietary blend of prebiotics shown to activate the gut microbiome to help protect kidney function. Prescription Diet k/d is also formulated with Enhanced Appetite Trigger (E.A.T) to stimulate appetite and encourage food intake.
This dry food is made with lamb and has an irresistible taste that your dog will love. In fact, the nutrition of Prescription Diet k/d is clinically proven nutrition to improve & lengthen quality of life.
How it works:
- Reduced phosphorus & sodium, enriched with omega-3 fatty acids
- ActivBiome+ Kidney Defense activates the gut microbiome to reduce harmful waste products
- With optimized levels of essential amino acids and high quality protein to help keep them strong
- Enhanced Appetite Trigger (E.A.T.) for dogs
How it helps:
- Helps protect vital kidney function
- Helps manage the invisible changes within the intestinal tract that impact kidney function
- Helps build muscle mass and helps maintain energy and strength
- Stimulates appetite & encourages food intake
- S+OXSHIELD: Formulated to promote a urinary environment that reduces the risk of developing struvite & calcium oxalate crystals

This product prolonged my dogs life!
Randiculous
I take my dog in yearly to get his blood work done, come to my surprise one of my dogs kidneys was showing irregular signs; the veterinarian told me his kidney was on the road to failure if I didn't change up his diet. My vet recommended The Hills Prescription K/D Formula. We tested the food for about a month before his next visit.. and when I brought him in for blood work, the vet told me his kidney values were back up, and almost to 100%!! I was so relieved!! Since then I kept him on the diet. His energy was up, he drinks water and urinates like a champ! lol. Bacon is a 5 year old Olde English bulldog who is full of life, very friendly and energetic. I've had him since before he was allowed to be adopted (long story) but I've bottle-fed this little guy since the beginning and, I am so grateful products like Hills exist so we can enjoy more years together. I'll admit, the price for prescription dog food is a bit steep, but worth totally worth it! Thank you Hills!!

New and Improved, NOT
Lisa
The new and improved k/d with lamb is darker in color. My dog is 12-14 years of age. He's been eating the formula for 3 or 4 years now. This so called new and improved gives him bad gas. Please bring back the old formula. This is not good for older dogs that have been on the old formula for a long time. New is not always better!

Angel has stage 3 kidney disease acquied in May of 2020. Charts and vets said she might live 200 days. She is still alive and doing great 4 1/2 years later at 10 yrs of age.! We have combined the k/d kibble with the k/d canned stew, along with a daily pumpkin and oats muffin . She has great energy and consistent appetite.

Big improvement in her health
My 14+ yr old 3.4 # chihuahua was diagnosed with kidney failure several months ago. She was put on K/D canned as she has no teeth. She is doing so much better. She does have a bad day every now & then. She really likes the lamb. Freshly opened she eats without much issue but if it the can goes past 3 days old she starts turning her nose up at it refusing to eat until she gets super hungry. I sometimes have to toss 1/4 of a can. Sure wish it came in smaller portions for small dogs like her. I waste a lot.
Yes, I recommend this product.

HELP! Please make this food again!

My dog is in kidney failure. We give her subcutaneous fluids every other day. I feed her 4 small meals throughout the day or she vomits. This is the only food she will eat (and keep down.) She stopped eating dry food last year so the vet switched her to this canned food. Our vet says she can only have the lamb, other flavors are not an option due to her medical issues. I serve it to her with a bit of organic vegetable stock. When it became hard to find, I drove for hours to pick up as much as I could get my hands on. We are almost out and I can't believe it hasn't been restocked yet. Should I assume it has been discontinued altogether? I am sure that my dog will not survive without it as she won't eat. Please help!

I would not recommend this food
It appears that Hills has decided to change the once loved recipe of this food. I can agree with several others on here that my dog will not TOUCH THIS FOOD. The moment she smells the food she steps away and turns her nose up at it. The consistency is one of the worst that I have seen, it sticks to everything it touches. This is going back to PetSmart
No, I do not recommend this product.
